GFWC-OK Fortnightly Club of McAlester won two Community Service awards. The first award is for International Outreach. McAlester Fortnightly awarded gifts from Heifer International to three speakers who presented during their 2019 Spring Banquet. The donation was directed to the Women’s Improvement Fund in Bangladesh and India. The group also provided more than 200 pair of new orthopedic shoes as part of the GFWC OK State Spring Convention which were procured from Hanger Clinic in McAlester.
One member provided $360 of support for a family in the Philippines. Other members support their church missionary projects in other countries.
Club women participated in a local culture festival celebrating Native American art and music; supported a Children’s New Toy Drive in McAlester and donated 245 toys which were collected during the Southeast District convention; and contributed to operation Christmas child by donating 47 shoe boxes.
The group also won in the Public Issues category with members volunteering at the voting polls and nursing homes along with decorating cemeteries and recognizing veterans. Members contacted legislatures regarding funding for special needs residents. Members donate to the American Center for Law and Justice. Members donate time and food items to the local VFW. One member provided a program on Patriotism for the local Rotary Club and gave all members small flags as part of the program.
