From GFWC International
Attendees learned of the special relationship between Madame President’s family with Dr. Benjamin, former U.S. Surgeon General during President Obama’s Administration. She is a former student of Suellen’s late husband, Billy Brazil. He often praised the then eighth grader Miss Benjamin as being someone destined for greatness. Hailing from Daphne, Alabama, Dr. Benjamin became the 18th U.S. Surgeon General and the first African American woman to serve as the premier physician for all Americans.
Dr. Benjamin thanked GFWC members for their volunteerism and dedication to serving their communities. She expressed the importance of health and wellness for the minority community and the importance of delivering health care across cultures that protects the patient’s dignity because access to services is not equal for low-income populations.
In closing, she asked that GFWC members continue to advocate for those without a voice, as well as promote healthy lifestyles and wellness across the U.S., and increase the number of Americans who are healthy in every stage of their lives.
